Enjoy world-class skiing just minutes away. Centrally located to all the major ski areas, Shooting Star is the perfect place to relax after a day on the slopes. Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, and Northstar are all within a 15-minute drive, and Homewood and Heavenly are just a bit farther. Each resort offers facilities for downhill skiing and snowboarding, and Squaw and Northstar offer cross-country skiing, as well. Shuttle service available. Equipment Rental:
North America’s largest alpine lake is just across the street, so boating of all kinds reigns supreme in the summertime. Sailing. Enjoy a sightseeing sail or sunset cruise aboard a 35-foot sailboat. Call Tahoe Sailing Charters (530-583-6200). Fishing Boats. Reel in Rainbow Trout, Mackinaws, and German Browns on a guided fishing charter. We recommend Tahoe Fishing Company (530-546-8425) and Reel Deal (530-581-0924). Canoes & Kayaks. Down the road at the Kayak Café (530-546-9337) you can rent different types of human-powered boats, enjoy a cup of coffee and a snack, and kick back and take in the view. Beach Barn (530-546-3111) in Kings Beach also rents kayaks. Fly-fishing Guides and Equipment. Stock up on everything you need to reel in the “big one” at Reno Fly Shop/Truckee River Outfitters. (530-583-0900 or 775-825-3474). In the summer, Squaw Valley, Alpine Meadows, and Northstar all pack up the skis and snowboards and open the stables. All three offer guided trail rides and pack charters. Carnelian Bay has two newly restored public beaches with picnic tables and barbecues, a nice lakeside path, and a public pier that’s perfect for a leisurely, scenic stroll — all just a quick walk from Shooting Star. Hiking & Biking. Discover miles of Forest Service trails right in our own Carnelian Bay neighborhood. Walk out our door and enjoy mountain biking and hiking for all levels or simply take a stroll among the stately pines and amazing natural mountain scenery. You need not go far for some spectacular lake views. Grab a trail map in our upstairs lobby. Rent a Bike. Downhill, road, performance mountain gear you can rent just about anything on wheels at the Olympic Bike Shop. Single- or multiple-day rentals available (530-581-2500). Bring along the ol’ woods and irons and enjoy golf courses with gorgeous terrains and unbeatable views. We recommend: Old Brockway is a scenic nine-hole course. 400 Brassie Ave., Kings Beach (530-546-9909). Coyote Moon offers a majestic setting and a championship 18-hole course designed by Brad Bell.10685 Northwoods Blvd., Truckee (530-587-0886). Resort at Squaw Creek has a beautiful championship 18-hole course. 400 Squaw Creek Road, Squaw Valley (530-583-6300). Northstar at Tahoe is a NCGA-rated par 72 course and offers assistance from a resident PGA pro. (530-562-2490). Visit one of the many galleries featuring local artists and craftspeople. This non-profit organization supports the arts and artists of the North Lake Tahoe and Truckee area. Vista Gallery. 7081 North Lake Blvd., Tahoe Vista (530-546-7794). A fine art gallery featuring original art by over 36 accomplished contemporary artists in a variety of media and Tahoe nostalgic images.
